Author Rights Guidelines
Purpose
Synsto Publications is committed to a fair, transparent, and author-focused publishing process. These author rights guidelines align with our Publishing Guidelines and Author Permissions Guidelines, ensuring compliance with international standards, ethical practices, and the protection of your creative and intellectual interests.
Copyright and Ownership
- Initial Ownership: You, the author, retain full copyright of your submitted work (books, chapters, or other content) until a publishing agreement is signed.
- Transfer or Licensing: Upon acceptance, you may grant Synsto Publications:
- A copyright transfer, giving us exclusive rights to publish, reproduce, and distribute your work globally in all formats (print, digital, audio, etc.).
- OR an exclusive license, allowing us to publish while you retain copyright.
- Terms will be detailed in your contract, consistent with our Publishing Guidelines and international standards like the Berne Convention.
- Reversion of Rights: If your work goes out of print, is no longer distributed, or the contract term ends, rights may revert to you, as specified in the agreement, aligning with our commitment to author protections.
Right to Attribution
- Credit: You have the right to be identified as the author of your work in all editions, formats, and promotional materials, per global standards like the Berne Convention.
- Co-Authorship: All co-authors must be accurately credited. You must obtain their consent before submission, as noted in our Author Permissions Guidelines.
- Pseudonyms: You may use a pseudonym if desired; include your legal name for contractual purposes and note your preference in the cover letter.
Usage Rights
- Personal Use: Post-publication, you may:
- Share limited excerpts (e.g., up to 500 words or 10% of the work, whichever is less) for non-commercial purposes (e.g., teaching, personal website, social media), crediting Synsto Publications, as outlined in our Publishing Guidelines.
- Use your work in academic or educational settings with proper attribution.
- Self-Archiving: You may deposit pre-publication versions (e.g., submitted manuscript or accepted draft) in institutional repositories or personal websites, subject to an embargo (typically 6–12 months post-publication), per contract terms and our Publishing Guidelines.
- Subsequent Works: You are free to create derivative works (e.g., sequels, adaptations) unless restricted by the contract, ensuring no conflict with our exclusive publication rights.
Publication Rights
- Formats and Distribution: We may publish your work in print, e-book, audiobook, and digital formats, distributing globally, as stated in our Publishing Guidelines. This aligns with our Author Permissions Guidelines for third-party content use.
- Translations and Adaptations: We may pursue translations or adaptations (e.g., film, multimedia). You will be consulted, with terms addressed in the contract, consistent with permissions processes.
- Open Access Option: If chosen, your work may be published under a Creative Commons license (e.g., CC BY), allowing free access and reuse with attribution, as noted in both prior guidelines.
Editorial and Creative Control
- Input: You have the right to review and comment on editorial changes (e.g., copyediting, formatting) to preserve your vision, though we retain final decisions on style and production to meet quality standards, per our Publishing Guidelines.
- Revisions: You may be asked to revise based on peer review or editorial feedback. You can accept, modify, or decline suggestions, provided changes align with our ethical and quality standards, as in our Author Permissions Guidelines.
- Proofs: You have the right to review proofs before publication to correct errors, with major changes limited, consistent with our publishing process.
Ethical and Legal Protections
- Fair Treatment: We adhere to Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) principles, ensuring transparency and fairness, aligning with both Publishing and Author Permissions Guidelines.
- Dispute Resolution: You have the right to raise concerns about the process (e.g., delays, edits). We will address them fairly, per contract terms and COPE standards.
- Data Protection: Your personal data (e.g., name, contact details) is safeguarded under international laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), used only for publishing and communication, as noted in our Author Permissions Guidelines.
- Non-Discrimination: We treat all authors equally, regardless of race, gender, nationality, or other traits, in line with global standards.
Additional Rights
- Promotion: You may promote your work, share announcements, and link to www.synsto.com or authorized platforms. We expect cooperation with reasonable marketing efforts (e.g., interviews), as outlined in our Publishing Guidelines.
- Access to Publication: You will receive a complimentary copy (print or digital, per contract) and may purchase additional copies, subject to terms, consistent with our publishing process.
- Termination: You have the right to understand contract termination conditions (e.g., non-publication, breach), which will be clearly stated, aligning with our guidelines.
